Every year Kimmy has a birthday. I have noticed over the last eight years, there is quite a bit of tradition involved with Kimmy’s special day to celebrate another trip around the sun. Due to the celebratory meals-out, I manage to gain a few pounds. But my favorite tradition is watching to see how long Kim can keep her eyes rolling into the back of her head while her birth story is recounted…
Kimmy blushes while details are brought up. Her Apgar score. Being born blind. Not crawling. Being labeled as “She won’t—fill in the blank”. She’s usually blushing as she hears the story, trying to interrupt with a “Mom, Gosh, we’ve heard it all before!” but I like to hear it. It reminds me of the mind-boggling reality that I was only a few short breaths and turbulent heartbeats away losing the one person who understands me best in the world—before we even met.
I am grateful to have her as a partner in crime. Her smile is contagious in even the most sterile and desolate environments. I’m also thrilled to have a scapegoat for added pounds as she will always order a large fry, yet somehow never finishes it. (She knows what she’s doing.) Love you Kimberly!
